A deer at Nara Park in the winter

Nara Park in Winter

Nara Park in winter is well worth the visit, because you can still expect to see the famous deer of Nara at that time of year even though it gets quite cold.

Although winter temperatures in Nara can get down into the mid to high 30s Fahrenheit (around 3 degrees Celsius), it does not snow very often (2 to 5 days in December, January, and February).

If you are lucky enough to have snow when you visit Nara in winter, you are in for a visual treat. The park looks enchanting blanketed in white, with the deer clearly visible even at a distance for excellent photo ops.

If you don’t have snow, the landscape looks a bit stark, because most of the trees are bare and the ground brown. But you can still see lots of deer, and enjoy the park without the crowds.

In the winter, the deer of Nara grow thick coats, which they shed when the weather warms up in the spring. And you can see little puffs as they breathe in and out in the cold air!

You will need warm clothes for Nara in winter. Wear gloves and a beanie to stay warm as you walk the park, and make sure your shoes have good grip and are suitable for walking on ice, slush, or snow.
